The first race of the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam weekend took place today: the Junior Challenge. Over 600 high school students took part in this Dutch Championship School Triathlon. New and former winners took their places on the podium in the categories <16 and >16.
Davy Heijsteeg and Joyce Caro are the winners of the >16 category. Furthermore, Caro was the best athlete from Almere. Both athletes will also participate in the final of the Lotto Premier League this Sunday. Thomas Jansen became the fastest Almeerder in the >16 category. In the younger category, Mark Bennis and Romy Spoelder were crowned champion. Spoelder prolonged her title from last year. Jansen, Bennis and Spoelder also won in the school rankings, since their high school Het Baken won first prize.
The young athletes participated in 1/10th of the long distance triathlon: they began with the 380 meter swim course in the Weerwater, followed by a 18 km bike course and a 4,2 run course. The students were able to use the official course of the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam 2015. Even though the weather was great, it was still a difficult race for the participants because of water temperatures of 17 degrees Celsius.
