In recent (summer) weeks, the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) has been detected in The Weerwater. This happens almost every year. Of course, Challenge Almere-Amsterdam has been monitoring these levels closely and has observed that – as is usually the case during this time of year – the levels have already been decreasing significantly over the past few days. Nevertheless, the organization is leaving nothing to chance and has entered into a preventive partnership with RanMarine Technology, a specialist in water quality solutions: starting today (September 3) until September 11, a so-called CyanoShark will be deployed daily along the swim course. This advanced system uses multimodal, chemical-free treatment methods to safely disrupt and neutralize harmful algae growth, while minimizing the impact on other aquatic organisms.
In addition, the weather forecasts for the coming days look very favorable – with lower temperatures, a strong breeze, and occasional showers – so the organization currently has no concerns about whether the swim will take place or whether an alternative swim location will be needed. Athlete safety is, in any case, our highest priority, which is why we are taking this extra measure in the form of a collaboration with RanMarine Technology.
Blue-green algae occur naturally in water bodies worldwide in low concentrations and are usually harmless, but under certain summer conditions they can grow into problematic concentrations, making water quality management a common challenge for open water events. During the period that the CyanoShark will be active – until September 11 – its progress and effectiveness will be closely monitored to continue assessing water quality. Of course, complete control is never possible, but every effort is being made to create optimal conditions. This is now made possible in part thanks to the innovative approach and maximum efforts of RanMarine Technology.
